Northwest Whitfield Pilots "Farm to School" Program

Northwest Whitfield High School agriculture students welcomed guests including state school board member Larry Winter yesterday to tour their "Farm to School" program, one of only 17 launched in Georgia this year.

Serving farm fresh locally-grown produce in school cafeterias teaches students about agriculture and creates new markets for Georgia farmers, a smart strategy to support the local economy while promoting student health.

Whitfield County Student Wins Regional Speech Contest

Whitfield County eighth-grader Gavin Mullis wowed judges Monday with his speech about "A Time When Volunteering Made a Difference." 

Mullis, who attends North Whitfield Middle School, presented his speech at the Dalton Little Theatre during the regional civic oration contest. The Modern Woodmen of America sponsor the competition and set the topic each year.

To earn a spot at the district-wide event, students competed and won the speech contest at their respective schools.

PGE Penny Drive Support American Cancer Society

Pleasant Grove Elementary second-grader Fatima Lopez Teran leads a "Walk All Over Cancer" at recess, one of several activities during a recent "Penny Drive" to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life where students raised nearly $1,500 for the American Cancer Society of Whitfield County.

Pleasant Grove’s counselor, Sheila Wilson, integrated cancer education and other informational activities into the daily curriculum during the week of the fundraiser. One activity was the "Relay for Life Recess," a walking event where students chose to "Walk All Over Cancer" during recess.

Dalton State College recently graduated 16 students from the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Program at the Northwest Georgia College and Career Academy under the direction of Teresa Andrews and Donna Kent. Eastbrook Artists to Launch Exhibit Tuesday

Student artists from Eastbrook Middle School are eager to share their work during a two-week exhibit that will be on display at the Whitfield County Courthouse beginning Tuesday, May 15.

Students in Eastbrook Middle School’s Visual Arts Honors Program with advanced artistic ability have studied in a year-long program with their art teacher Kristi Harvey. The program provides an independent study/studio environment with opportunities for students to hone their technical skills and creative processes throughout the school year.
